How To Play South Africa Powerball Plus Lottery?
Powerball launched in October 2009 and has become one of South Africa’s most popular lotteries due to the large jackpots it often offers due to rollovers. In addition to creating tens of thousands of lottery winners each week, this game has been instrumental in providing funds for good causes; you can read more about the work of the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund here.
Powerball draws take place on Tuesday and Friday evenings at 9.00pm and details of the winning numbers and prize breakdown are available online the following morning. Tickets can be purchased in advance for up to ten draws covering a five-week period - i.e. one or two draws per week for up to five weeks.
If the jackpot is not won then the funds will continue to roll over until there is a jackpot winner. Winning tickets are valid for 365 days after the draw and prizes are paid out as a tax-free lump sum.
How to Play Powerball
Powerball differs from Lotto and Lotto Plus in that it is a double matrix game requiring players to choose five main numbers from a pool of 45 plus a single secondary number from a separate ball pool of 1 to 20. Unlike other lotto games which use a ball from the secondary pool as a ‘Bonus Ball’, the secondary number - or Powerball – is an integral part of the game. In order to win the jackpot, a player must successfully match all five main numbers and the Powerball. A player can select their own numbers or choose the Quick Pick option which provides the player with a selection of randomly generated numbers.
Prize tiers are as follows:
Divisions | Numbers Matched | Winning Odds |
---|---|---|
Level 1 | 5 + Powerball | 1:24,435,180 |
Level 2 | 5 | 1:1,286,062 |
Level 3 | 4 + Powerball | 1:122,176 |
Level 4 | 4 | 1:6,430 |
Level 5 | 3 + Powerball | 1:3,133 |
Level 6 | 3 | 1:165 |
Level 7 | 2 + Powerball | 1:247 |
Level 8 | 1 + Powerball | 1:53 |
Level 9 | Powerball | 1:37 |
The overall odds of winning any Powerball prize are 1 in 18.
To give your numbers another chance to win prizes, tick the Powerball Plus option and they will be entered into the supplementary draw at a cost of R2.50 per line. See the Powerball Plus page to find out more information about the game.
Playing Powerball Online
Players who are resident overseas or unable to visit an authorised retailer can buy South Africa Powerball tickets via lottery concierge service at the Buy Tickets page.
Playing at a Local Retailer
Tickets for Powerball can be purchased in person from a wide network of authorised retailers throughout South Africa. If purchasing a ticket from a retailer, please ensure that you keep your ticket safe as you will need to present it to lottery officials in the event that you win a prize. It is also very important that you sign the back of your ticket as, if you lose it, your prize could be claimed by the finder of the ticket if it is unsigned.
